According to Financial Information News, nearly 200 U.S. Silicon Valley startups have jointly urged President Trump and top government officials to avoid a comprehensive ban on American companies using Chinese open-weight AI models, citing concerns that such restrictions could increase development costs and entrench OpenAI and Anthropic's market dominance.
The startups, organized through the newly formed Little Tech Association, warned that a broad prohibition would fail to prevent Chinese models from spreading globally while forcing many U.S. developers relying on low-cost Chinese alternatives like Alibaba and Moonshot to switch to pricier closed-source American models. The group proposed that the government instead implement targeted safeguards for national security, intellectual property, and military applications.
