New York Suspends Data Center Construction for Up to 1 Year

According to Axios, on July 15, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order to temporarily suspend construction of data centers using 50 megawatts or more of power for up to one year. The move comes as data center expansion becomes a heated issue ahead of midterm elections.

The suspension reflects growing pushback from voters concerned about data centers and provides other Democratic-led states with a policy model to address the politically sensitive issue, Axios reported. State Senator Christine Gonzalez had separately introduced legislation to suspend data centers, though Hochul's executive order approach enables faster action despite complex policy considerations requiring additional negotiations.
