NHTSA Mandates New Federal Door Safety Standards for All U.S. Vehicles Following Tesla Model Y Probe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Thursday that it has granted a petition to create a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard mandating robust and obvious exit systems in all motor vehicles. The move follows a probe into approximately 174,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles over concerns that electronic door handles may become inoperative due to low battery voltage. NHTSA noted nine incidents where customers were unable to open Model Y doors, with the most common scenario involving parents unable to reopen doors after exiting to place or remove children from the back seat. The agency also denied a separate petition seeking a probe into Tesla Model 3's emergency door releases, determining the concern would be better addressed through the new universal standards now being developed.
