OpenAI CEO Says AI Unlikely to Cause Job Apocalypse, Admits Prediction Error on Tuesday

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday, artificial intelligence is unlikely to trigger a global "job apocalypse," contradicting his earlier concerns about widespread white-collar job displacement. Altman acknowledged that OpenAI's predictions about technology development since launching ChatGPT in 2022 were "basically correct," but its assessments of societal and economic impacts were "quite wrong." He stated that junior white-collar positions have not been eliminated at the scale he previously anticipated.

Altman attributed this to the "human element" in many jobs that cannot be replaced by AI. He noted that despite AI playing an increasingly prominent role across industries, the interpersonal interactions required in numerous roles cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence.
