OpenAI Launches Codex Pets, AI-Powered Virtual Companion with Custom Generation

According to Beating, OpenAI has added a new "Codex Pets" feature to the Codex desktop application, allowing users to spawn and interact with an animated virtual companion. Users can activate a pet by typing /pet in the editor. The feature functions as an agent status indicator, displaying a floating overlay that shows the current thread's state (running, awaiting input, under review) and progress summary without requiring users to switch back to the Codex window. The application includes preset pet designs and supports custom pet generation via the hatch-pet skill, enabling AI to automatically create unique companions based on user projects.
