OpenAI officially released its “Daybreak” cybersecurity initiative on the 11th, combining its latest GPT-5.5 series models and the program agent tool Codex to help enterprises and government agencies build defensive mechanisms from the very source of software development. It is seen as a direct response to Anthropic Mythos and Project Glasswing, symbolizing that the two AI giants have formally begun a competitive showdown in the enterprise cybersecurity market.

OpenAI Daybreak redefines cybersecurity strategy: from passive to proactive
For a long time, traditional cybersecurity operations have mostly been passive—waiting until vulnerabilities are discovered before patching. Daybreak’s purpose, however, is to break this convention. In its announcement, OpenAI said that the next generation of cyber defense should be built in from the start of software development, rather than trying to patch things up after the fact.
The official emphasized that Daybreak focuses on three core capabilities: compressing vulnerability analysis, which previously took hours, into just minutes; generating and testing patch code directly in software libraries; and returning complete, auditable results to the client-side systems.
CEO Sam Altman also personally endorsed the plan on X, saying: “AI is already very powerful in the cybersecurity domain, and it’s about to get even stronger. We want to partner with as many enterprises as possible now to help them continuously protect themselves.”
A three-tier model architecture matching defense needs across different risk levels
The technical core of Daybreak lies in a three-tier model architecture designed for tasks with varying degrees of sensitivity.
First tier: uses the standard GPT-5.5, for general-purpose use, with basic protective mechanisms.
Second tier: uses GPT-5.5 Trusted Access for Cyber, intended specifically for defense personnel who pass identity verification. It covers workflows such as secure code review, vulnerability classification, malicious program analysis, detection engineering, and patch validation.
Third tier: uses GPT-5.5-Cyber. Currently it is only available in preview form, for authorized red teaming, penetration testing, and controlled validation, and includes stricter account-level controls.
OpenAI disclosed that there is rationale behind this tiered design. AI with such powerful capabilities comes with the risk of a double-edged sword. Therefore, while expanding defensive capacity, Daybreak is also paired with identity verification, proportional protection measures, and a clear accountability mechanism to maintain a balance between capability and safety.

Tech and cybersecurity giants join in, with partners spanning across industries
Another highlight of Daybreak is its large roster of partners. OpenAI has already teamed up with more than twenty vendors, including Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Oracle, and Intel. The collaboration spans the full chain of activities—from vulnerability discovery and patch remediation to threat monitoring and software supply chain security.
At present, enterprises can apply to OpenAI for vulnerability scanning and assessment; pricing has not been disclosed. Over the next few weeks, OpenAI will further expand collaboration and deployment with government and industry partners.
AI cybersecurity competition accelerates, and Anthropic Glasswing first draws big-name companies like Apple
The launch of Daybreak is the latest power struggle among AI companies vying for the enterprise cybersecurity market. Anthropic’s Project Glasswing was leaked and sparked discussion last month, and even the Claude Mythos model, which has not yet been officially released, has already attracted tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
In a recent disclosure, Anthropic researcher Alex Albert said that with the help of Claude Mythos, Firefox found and patched as many as 423 vulnerabilities in April—more than the total from the previous 15 months.
