According to Forbes, OpenAI Sora shut down recently despite receiving a billion-dollar investment from Disney, prompting YouTube to accelerate efforts in managing AI-generated content on its platform. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan acknowledged the surprise closure while underscoring the fundamental shift AI poses to the video industry.
YouTube reported in May that it would automatically label videos "significantly altered or fully generated by AI," even without creator disclosure. The platform also launched an AI-powered digital avatar tool on YouTube Shorts in April, allowing users to generate personalized virtual characters for various scenarios. To prevent unauthorized deepfakes, YouTube implemented a "Likeness Detection" system requiring users to upload their own photos before activating the feature. Approximately one million creators have authorized YouTube to use their content for AI model training, though the platform has not disclosed financial compensation for this licensing.
