Gate News message, April 29 — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a redesigned Codex interface on X today, introducing two distinct modes for users. “Excelmogging” targets everyday office tasks with a simplified interface and the tagline “Same tools, simpler interface,” featuring example tasks like creating spreadsheets. “Codemaxxing” is aimed at professional developers with the description “For coding and development,” with sample tasks including debugging database queries.
Codex, which originally focused on code generation and engineering tasks, has expanded far beyond its initial scope. The product now boasts over 4 million weekly active users and is used for research analysis, document summarization, and slide creation. The new interface formalizes this trend by routing non-programmer users to a more streamlined experience. This shift reflects a broader industry pattern: Anthropic’s Claude has split into Claude Code (for programming) and Co Work (for general office use), while ByteDance’s TRAE Solo similarly divides programming and everyday office modes.
The dual-mode strategy underscores a growing consensus in the industry—programming agents are increasingly extending into general-purpose office productivity tools.
