Poland's Tusk Warns NATO Experiencing 'Disintegration' as US Withdraws 5,000 Soldiers from Germany on May 2

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned today (May 2) that NATO is experiencing 'ongoing disintegration' after the US withdrew 5,000 soldiers from Germany following a diplomatic dispute between President Trump and German Chancellor Merz. According to Tusk's statement on X, the dispute marked the beginning of NATO's collapse. Trump's troop reduction came after Merz suggested the US had been 'humiliated' by Iranian leadership. A NATO spokesman stated the adjustment underscores the need for Europe to invest more in defence and assume greater responsibility for shared security.

European nations face mounting pressure to increase defence spending. Poland is allocating nearly 5% of its GDP to defence this year, while the UK is lagging behind its NATO target of 3.5% of GDP by 2035, according to an analysis by City AM.
