According to Portuguese newspaper Comercial Português on May 11, the Portuguese government plans to temporarily nationalize abandoned rural land with unconfirmed ownership. The mechanism applies to rural plots registered in the tax authority’s land database but lacking confirmed owners. Land under temporary state registration will be held for 15 years, during which it can be developed or transferred to third parties. Legal owners may claim rights within 15 years; if unclaimed after the period, the land becomes permanent state property.
