Russia's Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile Malfunctions on May 24, Strikes Own Troops in Donetsk

According to researchers from the Study of War, on May 24, Russia's nuclear-capable Oreshnik hypersonic missile struck Russian military positions in occupied Donetsk, Ukraine, instead of reaching its intended target. Footage showed the multi-warhead weapon detonating near Donetsk landmarks in Russian-held territory. Ukrainian monitoring channels claim the errant strike may have hit Russian forces. Reports indicate the missile failed following a double launch from Russia's Kapustin Yar test site, with the first warhead crashing immediately in Donetsk while the second reached Bila Tserkva near Kyiv. The Oreshnik system, which travels at 10 times the speed of sound, reportedly malfunctions on up to 25 percent of launches, raising concerns about its operational reliability.
