Sberbank to Launch Crypto Trading and Custody Platform by December 1

According to Sberbank first deputy chairman Alexander Vedyakhin, Russia's largest lender is preparing to launch a cryptocurrency trading and custody platform by December 1, 2026, as the country implements its first comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets. The platform will feature a digital depository maintaining clients' cryptocurrency ownership records on internal ledgers while settling most transactions off-chain, supported by active wallets for customer deposits and transfers. Under Russia's digital asset rules, which take effect September 1, 2026, only cryptocurrencies meeting minimum liquidity thresholds can qualify for regulated trading, with requirements including an average market capitalization above 5 trillion roubles (approximately US$64 billion) and average daily trading volumes exceeding 1 trillion roubles (roughly US$12.8 billion) measured over two years. Sberbank has not yet disclosed which cryptocurrencies will be supported or announced fee structures.
