South Korea's Policy Chief Emphasizes Production Capacity Over Technology in AI Chip Race on June 10

According to a Facebook post by Kim Yong-beom, chief policy adviser to South Korea's presidential office, on June 10, competition in semiconductors during the AI era has shifted from technology innovation to production capacity race. Kim stressed that the most critical resource governments can provide to companies is not financial investment, but time. He noted that as AI data centers, autonomous vehicles, and humanoid robots expand, demand for high-performance memory is structurally increasing. Kim also warned that past competitive strategies, such as aggressive pricing to eliminate competitors, may be less effective in an environment of structural demand growth. He emphasized that the state's role should focus on removing administrative bottlenecks—including power grids, water supply, transmission networks, and regulatory procedures—rather than direct investment, allowing companies to sustain long-term strategic investments.
