Sui's layer-1 blockchain experienced a network outage beginning Thursday morning around 10:30 a.m. ET, with the disruption lasting over five hours as of the afternoon. The Sui team identified the technical issue causing the "network stall" and began rolling out a fix to validators at 3:40 p.m. ET according to the network's status page. This marks the second major outage for Sui in 2025, following a six-hour network stall in January that similarly halted transaction processing on the mainnet.

Technical Timeline of the Outage

The network stall was first identified and investigated Thursday morning. Sui posted on X at approximately 10:30 a.m. ET: "Sui Mainnet is currently experiencing a network stall. Be aware that transactions may be paused at this time. Updates will be shared as soon as they are available."

An update to the Sui network status page at 3:40 p.m. ET stated that a "fix is rolling out to validators." The network's engineers identified the issue shortly after beginning their investigation, though implementation of the fix was still in progress as of the article's publication.

Sui previously suffered a network stall in January 2025 that resulted in more than six hours of downtime. Prior to that, the network dealt with a significant validator issue in 2024 that prevented transactions from processing.

Token Price Impact

SUI, the network's native token, fell 5.4% in the 24 hours following the outage, trading at $0.92. This decline outpaced losses from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other top cryptocurrencies during the same period.

The token reached an all-time high of $5.35 in January 2025 but has since fallen more than 82% from that peak. Earlier in 2025, the first SUI ETFs entered the market, with Canary and Grayscale both launching products offering exposure to the SUI token and staking reward access to traditional investors through equities markets.

Network Background

Sui launched in 2023 and was developed by Mysten Labs, a spinoff of Meta's Diem project. The network raised $300 million in a Series B funding round in 2022 that valued it at $2 billion.

The blockchain was built to compete with other high-speed layer-1 blockchains, positioning itself as an alternative to networks like Solana, which has also faced downtime issues in its history.

Next Steps

The Sui team is rolling out a fix to validators as of 3:40 p.m. ET on Thursday, according to the network's official status page. The blockchain stated it will share updates as soon as they become available.
