According to Sygnum, BancaStato, the cantonal bank of Ticino in southern Switzerland, launched regulated crypto trading on Thursday. Clients can now buy, hold, and sell bitcoin directly through the bank's existing web and mobile apps by connecting Sygnum's API to the bank's Avaloq core banking system. The service enables market orders by quantity or U.S. dollar value, with bitcoin at the center of the initial offering.
Client assets are held off-balance sheet in Sygnum's institutional-grade, multi-layer custody solution, protecting holdings from creditors if the bank enters bankruptcy. Sygnum holds a Swiss banking license and, since June 30, 2026, a Crypto-Asset Service Provider license under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, enabling EU banks to access its infrastructure for digital asset services.
