According to a May 14 announcement, the Tezos ecosystem unveiled TzEL, a testnet designed to enable private payments while protecting against future quantum computing threats. The prototype uses zk-STARK (Zero-Knowledge Scalable Transparent Arguments of Knowledge) cryptography to encrypt transaction metadata and payment information while maintaining blockchain verification capabilities. Unlike zk-SNARK systems, zk-STARKs do not require a trusted setup mechanism and are considered more resistant to potential quantum computing attacks. The testnet remains in prototype phase and has not yet been deployed on the Tezos mainnet.
