UK Gang Sentenced for $5.4M Crypto Theft via Fake Police Impersonation

According to Protos, a UK gang was sentenced this week for stealing $5.4 million in cryptocurrency by impersonating police officers and creating fraudulent police websites. The trio—Hamza Bashir, 23, Kevin Nwamma, 25, and Anthony Ikenwe, 29—received sentences of six years nine months, eleven years, and eleven years respectively. They convinced crypto holders to transfer funds to fake "secure accounts" via phone calls. Police discovered the stolen funds were converted into luxury purchases including a £60,000 car, designer goods from Hermès and Louis Vuitton, and holiday trips, along with £500,000 in cash found in a safe deposit box. The investigation began in January 2025 following victim reports to the Metropolitan Police.
