U.S. Consumer Confidence Hits Two-Year Low as 61% Express Pessimism; 60% Disapprove of Trump Economic Policies

According to a CNBC poll released recently, 61% of Americans expressed pessimism about economic prospects and current conditions, marking the highest level since December 2023, while only about one-quarter held optimistic views. The survey found that 60% of respondents disapprove of President Trump's handling of economic issues, with just 38% approving—one of the lowest ratings of his political career. Additionally, 47% of consumers reported reducing purchases of essential items such as food and healthcare, up 6 percentage points from April. A Bain & Company and NielsenIQ study showed U.S. grocery purchases fell 1.8% year-over-year in June, a sharp contrast to 0.1% growth in the prior year.
