U.S. Data Center Power Demand Projected to Hit 106 GW by 2035, Bitcoin Miners Shift 20% Capacity to AI by 2027

According to Bloomberg NEF (BNEF), by 2035, U.S. data center electricity consumption is projected to reach 106 GW, accounting for about 20% of national power demand, up from the current 5.9%. This represents a 36% upward revision from BNEF's April forecast of 78 GW. The U.S. Electric Power Research Institute projects similar outcomes when factoring in crypto mining and AI compute demands, with electricity consumption reaching the same 20% threshold. Facing explosive AI compute growth, bitcoin miners are rapidly pivoting to AI infrastructure. Core Scientific and Riot Platforms have partnered with tech giants including AWS and Google to convert mining facilities into AI data centers. Bitcoin miners currently hold approximately 6 GW of secured power capacity, expected to expand to 12 GW by 2027, with analysts estimating roughly 20% of mining hashrate capacity will transition to AI workloads during this period.
