According to The New York Times as of July 20, the U.S. Department of Defense withheld disclosure of multiple attacks by Iran on American forces stationed in Jordan in the week prior to Friday's strike that killed two U.S. service members and left one missing. The earlier strikes caused dozens of injuries to U.S. personnel and damaged several helicopters, according to U.S. officials, though the Pentagon did not publicly report the casualties or equipment damage. U.S. military officials stated the disclosure was withheld to avoid revealing operational details that could aid Iranian targeting, citing security concerns over bases housing thousands of American troops across the Middle East.
