U.S. State Department Debuts Freedom Tech Program with Bitcoin Policy Institute as Founding Partner

The U.S. State Department is launching the Freedom Tech Excellence Program to advance digital freedom worldwide, with the Bitcoin Policy Institute, Palantir Technologies, Anduril Industries, and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation as founding partners.

The initiative will focus on five priority areas: First Amendment protections in the digital age, countering unlawful surveillance and online scams, privacy-enhancing technologies including encryption, responsible AI governance, and protecting online users. The inclusion of the Bitcoin Policy Institute signals the State Department views Bitcoin and blockchain as tools for circumventing censorship and financial surveillance in authoritarian states. The program will place private sector personnel inside the State Department on temporary assignments to shape diplomatic efforts around digital freedom issues.
