Verus Bridge Attacker Returns $8.5M in ETH After Accepting 1,350 ETH Negotiated Bounty

According to PeckShield, the Verus-Ethereum bridge attacker returned 4,052 ETH (approximately $8.5 million) to the project team following a negotiated settlement. The returned funds represent 75% of the $11.58 million total drained on May 18 via forged cross-chain transfer requests. The exploiter retained 1,350 ETH (roughly $2.8 million) as a bug bounty under a deal proposed by Verus with a 24-hour deadline for compliance. PeckShield confirmed the transfer to address 0xF9AB…C1A74, noting the recovery illustrates an emerging pattern of direct protocol-exploiter negotiations as an alternative to traditional enforcement mechanisms.
