Cryptocurrency futures trading, when used correctly, offers the potential to multiply profits; however, unplanned actions can result in liquidation (losing your balance) in seconds. Today, as part of the Gate Square Summer Creation Camp, we're examining the golden rules of protecting your capital and staying in the game in futures trading!
1. Avoid the Leverage Trap: Is the Power in Your Hands?
The biggest mistake beginners make is the illusion that high leverage (50x, 100x) will yield more profit. Leverage increases your profits, but it also increases the speed of your losses proportionally.
* Math Doesn't Lie: When using 100x leverage, a price move of only 1% in the opposite direction means your money is completely wiped out (liquidation).
* The Golden Rule: Professional traders generally prefer leverage between 3x and 10x. Remember, the important thing is not to get rich quick, but to earn consistently.
2. Your Lifeline: Stop-Loss
You can't always be right in the market. What matters is how much you lose when you're wrong. Not using a stop-loss is like driving at full speed on the highway without a seatbelt.
* Before entering a trade, determine the level of loss you're willing to accept and enter the stop order into the system.
* Constantly lowering (or raising) your stop level by saying "The price will turn around from here" shows that your psychology has given in. Stick to your plan.
3. Bankroll Management (Position Sizing): The 2% Rule
Entering a single futures contract with all your money (all-in) is not an investment strategy, it's gambling. Dividing your capital correctly will prevent you from going bankrupt even with consecutive erroneous trades.
* The 2% Rule: The maximum amount you can lose in a single trade should not exceed 1% to 2% of your total futures capital.
* For example, if you have a $1000 bankroll, the amount you lose when you get stopped out should be a maximum of $20. Thus, even with a wrong prediction, you'll still have $980 left to trade.
4. Isolated vs. Cross Margin: Which one?
* Isolated Margin: Only the margin you allocate to that trade is at risk. It's the safest method.
* Cross Margin: Uses your entire wallet balance to keep the losing position open. A single wrong trade can wipe out your entire futures wallet. For beginners, Isolated Margin is always safer.
