It’s been a week since I got back from Japan.

I borrowed an umbrella from my Airbnb host in Kyoto.
Completely forgot to return it when I checked out and only realized once I was already on the train to Osaka.
I felt horrible because it wasn’t some cheap convenience store umbrella either.

Texas doesn’t have state income tax.
What it DOES have is a property tax bill that resets every year based on whatever your home is “worth now.”
Mine went up $3,800 in a single year.
I didn’t get a raise. My house didn’t get bigger.
The state just decided it needed more money.

I missed the last train in Seoul once.
Phone at 3%. Didn’t speak Korean. It was raining, freezing, and I had no idea where I was supposed to go.
I tried calling an Uber but my card kept failing because of my bank fraud protection. Perfect timing.

I went to a public bath (sento) in a small town outside Tokyo. I was super nervous because I'm not Japanese and didn't want to break any etiquette rules.
An old man saw me looking confused and helped me out. Showed me where to put my shoes, how to wash before getting in the bath, where to sit, everything. We didn't speak English but we managed with gestures and my broken Japanese.
We ended up sitting in the bath together for a while. He asked where I was from, what brought me to Japan. I told him I was traveling after a bad breakup, and needed to clear my head.

About 25 years ago we went and fixed a faucet at a bakery. Our rate was probably $75 back then.
