PANews February 14th report, according to Variety, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) condemned ByteDance’s Chinese AI video generation service Seedance 2.0 for large-scale unauthorized use of American film and television copyrights within one day of launch, stating it is “engaging in widespread infringement activities” and lacks effective copyright protection measures, demanding that it cease such activities immediately. Previously, the MPA also issued a similar statement when OpenAI launched Sora 2, after which OpenAI added copyright protections and reached licensing agreements with Disney. The report indicates that Seedance 2.0 has generated numerous videos including elements such as “Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting on a rooftop,” as well as “Spider Man,” “Titanic,” “Stranger Things,” “Lord of the Rings,” and “Shrek.” Rights holders may take down notices and pursue legal action to protect their rights.
In addition to the MPA, Disney has issued a cease and desist letter; SAG-AFTRA, Human Artistry Campaign, and Copyright Alliance have also condemned the lack of copyright safeguards. The Japan Animation Film Culture Association (NAFCA) has also inquired about copyright issues with ByteDance’s TikTok in Japan.
