2025 Turing Award Announced: Developer of Quantum Key Distribution Protocol BB84 Wins Prize

Gate News reports that on March 19, 2025, the Turing Award was awarded to American IBM Fellow Charles H. Bennett and Gilles Brassard, Professor of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montreal, Canada. The two are recognized as pioneers of quantum information science. Their most famous achievement, the BB84 protocol, is the world’s first quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol, marking the birth of quantum cryptography.

Their collaboration began in 1979 when Brassard proposed to Bennett the idea of using quantum mechanics to create “unforgeable banknotes.” With the rapid development of quantum computing, traditional public key cryptography systems face serious challenges. Quantum communication (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) have become dual core approaches to ensuring the security of future digital communications.
