With the intensification of competition, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced an important plan to integrate existing multiple artificial intelligence models into a unified and efficient system.

Earlier today, Sam Altman revealed OpenAI’s strategic move to streamline its product lineup, aiming to consolidate the currently fragmented artificial intelligence models into a single system, a concept reminiscent of Steve Jobs’ vision.

Just a few weeks ago, Chinese competitor DeepSeek launched a more concise and powerful AI system that could quickly steal the limelight from OpenAI.

Altman stated on social media, “We hope to share our future plans more clearly and simplify our product offerings.” Currently, OpenAI offers a range of different models - some users may find them complex and difficult to distinguish, including the GPT series (large language models), the o series (inference models), DALL·E (image generator), Sora (video generator), GPT-Vision (visual understanding model), etc.

Altman echoed Steve Jobs’ quote on Twitter, “We want AI to ‘work for you,’ and we realize how sophisticated our models and products have become.” ”

To address this issue, Altman outlined a brand new roadmap, planning to simplify the user experience through the “Unified Intelligence” solution. Specifically, OpenAI will integrate multiple models including the GPT series and the “o series” into a single system that can handle various tasks. Whether it’s everyday conversations or complex analysis, the future system will be able to cope with them.

Altman explained, “We will integrate these models by creating a unified system that can use all our tools, enabling them to handle a variety of tasks from creative writing to deep reasoning.” The first step of this integration will be the release of GPT-4.5, internally codenamed “Orion,” expected to be launched in the coming weeks. This will be the final version based on the existing GPT technology.

However, the true transformation will be embodied in GPT-5, which will integrate all of OpenAI’s technologies, including the yet-to-be-released o3 model features. In short, GPT-5 will become a unified artificial intelligence core, capable of automatically switching functions according to specific tasks, handling tasks such as image generation, creative writing, complex reasoning, and programming, without the need for users to agonize over which model to use.

Currently, OpenAI’s reasoning model gradually deduces the answers to questions through the ‘thought chain’, but this technique is often not suitable for creative tasks, and vice versa: models that excel in creativity (such as GPT-4.5) perform poorly in reasoning. The launch of GPT-5 will make up for this deficiency and enhance performance in various tasks.

This update was also inspired by the strong competition from DeepSeek. DeepSeek recently released an outstanding AI model that is free and open-source, undoubtedly putting pressure on OpenAI. To address this challenge, OpenAI plans to offer GPT-5 to users through ChatGPT’s free package. Free users will have unlimited access to standard features, but their usage will be monitored to prevent abuse.

For enterprises and researchers, OpenAI has also introduced a tiered access system, where paid users can access more powerful computing capabilities and intelligent settings to help tackle more complex tasks. Advanced users will be able to use the most powerful features to further enhance productivity.

In addition, OpenAI will no longer release inference/encoding models separately (including the existing o3 model), but will integrate these functionalities directly into the GPT-5 system. This means that developers using the OpenAI API will no longer need to choose different models, but can directly access a powerful and versatile system.

Although this change may lead to an increase in the calculation cost of specific use cases, Altman is confident that the powerful performance of this system is worth the investment. He even said in a group discussion in Berlin: ‘I don’t think I will be smarter than GPT-5.’

As the celebrity said, ‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish,’ Sam.
