Gate News message, April 16 — Hong Kong’s Transport and Logistics Bureau Director Chen Meibao announced at a special Legislative Council Finance Committee meeting that the government will launch an integrated ride-hailing platform in April to enhance taxi fleet services and improve convenience for residents.
The platform aims to diversify taxi fleet operations and elevate passenger experience. Chen noted that the government has been closely monitoring and reviewing taxi fleet performance, with the goal of achieving the government-recommended scale of operations.
Regarding the number of ride-hailing licenses to be issued, Chen stated that while the government has referenced experiences from other cities, Hong Kong’s unique characteristics must be considered. She emphasized that 90% of residents use public transportation, and the government must balance factors including the capacity of the road system. The authorities will conduct internal assessments, gather data, and consult with stakeholders, including the taxi industry, before finalizing license numbers.
