How much achievement does one need to attain? Zhang Xuefeng's sudden death makes us pause and reflect.



Jiang Jie of the Song Dynasty passed the imperial examination, but just years later, the Song Dynasty fell. He never entered politics again and lived out his life this way. He wrote:

In youth I listened to rain on the song hall above,
Red candles dim through the silk curtains.
In middle age I listened to rain in a boat on the river,
The river vast, clouds low, wild geese call to the west wind.
Now I listen to rain beneath the temple eaves,
My temples already flecked with gray.
Joy and sorrow, separation and reunion—all are indifferent,
Let the drops fall from the steps until dawn breaks.
