Belief is also a part of strength

“Luck is also a part of strength!” The first time I saw this phrase was over a decade ago, in the anime “Naruto,” when Kakashi said it to Naruto. At the time, I thought it made a lot of sense, but I only felt that this idea was novel and somewhat reasonable, without my own understanding. Today, I interpret it as: even if success depends on luck, as long as you succeed, that luck becomes part of your inherent strength, just like “the winner takes all”—doesn’t the final “winner” have a bit of luck? Did Liu Bang defeat Xiang Yu without luck? Did Zhu Yuanzhang defeat Chen Youliang without luck? Winning can be said to rely on both strength and luck; likewise, losing is also the result of a combination of strength and luck. So, regardless of success or failure, luck has already been “melted” into your own strength.

Here, I want to propose a similar idea to “Luck is also a part of strength!”: Belief is also a part of strength! (This is my personal insight, a spontaneous thought. Perhaps others have proposed similar ideas, but I declare here that I haven’t seen this exact view elsewhere. Similar ideas exist but are expressed differently, and these are just fragments.)

Unlike “luck,” “belief,” as part of strength, is not as difficult to grasp. An individual can control “belief” and can achieve it through effort.

As a part of strength, “belief” first requires the individual to have an open and inclusive mindset, which is fundamental. Ray Dalio in his book “Principles” emphasizes that to make progress and improve, one must have an open mind, be willing to listen to criticism and opinions from others, and face one’s own shortcomings—this is the ability to “humbly accept advice.” Only with this ability can one “see the world clearly,” recognize others’ strengths, and identify one’s own deficiencies. Second, there must be the ability to discern things, which is crucial. The individual needs to have a basic understanding of the world—common sense—and be able to distinguish good from bad, right from wrong, beauty from ugliness. Only then can one make correct judgments when receiving external opinions and suggestions. Lastly, there must be the ability to trust others, which is core. Since “belief” can be grasped and achieved through effort, it is also a personal ability. When the first two conditions are met, if the individual harbors “doubts” about the world and internally resists believing, then even if others are right, that person cannot truly change their own behavior.

Specifically, in investing, we see many people who do not trust the data released by the government or the analysis articles written by others. This may be because they lack an open mindset or have a deep “doubt” about external information. As a result, many comment below others’ posts, criticizing or dismissing others’ opinions.

In investing, we don’t need to be extremely knowledgeable about every detail of a company or industry. We only need the ability to believe—to make basic judgments about things and choose to trust those who truly have investment ability. This can lead to good investment returns. This is what “representing” means. Brother always says he’s not good at research or understanding cycles, but the stocks he chooses always yield high returns. He attributes this to “copying others,” but in fact, this is a reflection of how strong his “belief” ability is.

It is said that “thousand-mile horses are common, but good judges of horses are rare.” In investing, we don’t necessarily need to be the top researcher or analyst, but just the good judge of horses. Let’s encourage each other!
