According to Anthropic engineers, Claude Code's system prompts were reduced by 80% with no performance degradation in coding evaluations. Earlier versions required extensive rules in prompts due to model limitations, but newer models developed the ability to make independent decisions, causing those rules to conflict with instructions and create divergence in outputs. The new strategy shifts to describing goals, such as writing code that matches surrounding code style, with instructions distributed across tool descriptions and optional skill modules.
