Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5 with Enhanced Agent Capabilities, Priced at $2 per Million Input Tokens

Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 on July 1, introducing its most capable Sonnet model to date. According to the company, Sonnet 5 can plan, use tools like browsers and terminals, and achieve autonomous operation levels that previously required larger, more expensive models. The new model delivers performance close to Opus 4.8 at lower cost, with significant improvements over Sonnet 4.6 in reasoning, tool use, coding, and knowledge work.

Sonnet 5 is now available across all plans, with Free and Pro users receiving it by default. Pricing during the launch period is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026, then increasing to $3 and $15 respectively. Safety assessments show Sonnet 5 has lower misbehavior rates than Sonnet 4.6 and reduced cybersecurity task capabilities compared to Opus models.
