Anthropic Rejects Open-Weight AI Model Ban, Proposes Chip Controls and Distillation Restrictions Instead

According to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in a July 27 statement, the company opposes bans on open-weight AI models, including those developed in China, amid US government scrutiny of Chinese AI models used by American companies. Instead, Anthropic called for keeping advanced chips and chipmaking equipment out of China, curbing industrial-scale model distillation, and requiring safety testing for sufficiently capable AI models regardless of whether they are open or closed-weight.
