U.S. AI Firms Distill Chinese Models; Nearly 200 U.S. Startups Urge Government to Maintain Access

According to China's Ministry of Commerce on July 27, many U.S. artificial intelligence companies have distilled Chinese models during their research and training phases. The ministry noted that nearly 200 U.S. startups have urged the government not to cut off access to Chinese open-source AI models, arguing such restrictions would weaken U.S. enterprise competitiveness. Several major U.S. multinational companies have also stated that model distillation is a widely-applied industry technique and should be permitted for U.S. enterprises.
