Apple Sues OpenAI and Former Employees Over Stolen Hardware Trade Secrets

On Friday, July 10, Apple sued OpenAI, OpenAI Foundation, and two former employees—Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan—in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging theft of hardware trade secrets. Apple claims Liu, who left the company in January after eight years, exploited an authentication bug to access Apple's internal systems, downloaded confidential hardware files including unreleased product information and technical specifications, and failed to return his company laptop. Tan, a former 24-year Apple employee who became OpenAI's chief hardware officer, allegedly used Apple's internal project names and confidential information to benefit OpenAI's hardware division. The lawsuit follows OpenAI's $6.4 billion acquisition of Jony Ive's hardware startup io Products.
