Bank of Japan Official Says Policy Rate Remains Far Below Neutral Level

According to the Bank of Japan's policy meeting minutes released on May 7, a policymaker stated during the March 18-19 policy meeting that the benchmark rate remains far below the neutral level. Another member said the central bank needs to raise policy rates if there are no signs of economic deterioration. Committee members discussed accelerating the pace of rate hikes by considering shorter intervals between increases or larger rate increments. One official warned that high oil prices could lead to stagflation.
