Canada's Retail Sales Rise 0.6% in April Amid Surging Gasoline Prices

GateNews
According to Statistics Canada, Canada's retail sales increased 0.6% month-over-month in April, following a 0.9% gain in March. The preliminary estimate was based on feedback from 52.1% of surveyed businesses. In the first quarter of 2026, retail sales grew 2.1%, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of expansion, significantly outpacing the 0.4% increase in the final three months of 2025. By volume, first-quarter retail sales still rose 1.2%, though surging gasoline prices appear to be increasingly squeezing household budgets and other consumer spending.
