CDC Activates Emergency Center, Classifies Hantavirus Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise Ship as Level 3 Response

According to U.S. media reports on May 8, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has activated its emergency operations center and classified a hantavirus outbreak aboard the Hondiurus cruise ship in the Atlantic as a Level 3 emergency response.

U.S. citizens who were aboard the ship will be quarantined in Nebraska upon their return to the United States. The CDC's Level 3 classification represents the lowest of three response tiers, indicating that the overall public health risk remains relatively low, though public health officials are actively monitoring developments.
