China Rejects Claim That Japan's Defense Buildup Targets Beijing, Calls It Militarism on June 2

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on June 2, Beijing rejected the notion that Japan's recent defense policy strengthening aims to contain China. Mao stated that "stoking external threats to justify military expansion is a common tactic of militarism," and emphasized that the Potsdam Declaration and other international instruments explicitly require Japan to fully disarm and not maintain industries capable of re-armament. Mao warned that "once the door to militarism is opened, no one can stand alone, and it will ultimately breed disaster."
