China's Monitored Coal Enterprises Report Declines in Output and Sales in Early July; Power Plant Stockpiles Exceed 220 Million Tons

According to China Coal Transportation and Sales Association, output and sales of monitored coal enterprises both declined in early July due to tightened safety regulations, mine maintenance, and rainfall. Demand from power plants weakened as increased hydroelectric and renewable energy output reduced coal consumption, while steelmakers faced weak demand in their off-season. Power plant coal stockpiles exceeded 220 million tons amid high temperatures, while import prices for Australian thermal coal fell below domestic prices for the same quality.
