Chinese Coast Guard Clashes with Philippine Military at South China Sea Shoal on July 20, Video Shows Violence

According to Philippine military and video footage shared on July 20, Chinese Coast Guard personnel clashed with Philippine soldiers at Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea. Philippine officials released a 25-second video showing Chinese personnel wielding long batons striking Philippine military personnel, along with photos of an injured soldier with a head wound.

The Philippines accused the Chinese Coast Guard of assault. China disputed the account, stating that its patrol vessel was conducting routine operations when Philippine forces approached dangerously and attacked first, and that the Philippines distorted facts.
