Claude Checks Clock Every 15 Minutes After Gaining Time Tool Access

According to developer Om Patel, Claude AI started frequently checking the clock after gaining access to a time tool on May 3, with the model checking every 15 minutes. The observation highlights that large language models previously lacked native time perception and were unaware of current time or intervals between messages.

Beyond standard time queries, Claude began using the time tool to check meal preparation status and calculate cooking times, even proactively announcing the current time without prompting. In one instance, Claude checked the clock to determine that a traditional Polish dish called Zurek had simmered long enough and informed the user to begin eating.
