According to the Wall Street Journal, Coinbase settled its Freedom of Information Act lawsuit with the U.S. SEC on July 22, with the SEC agreeing to pay $150,000 and reform its records retention policies, according to Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal. The lawsuit revealed that the SEC had lost nearly a year of communications between former Chair Gary Gensler and other senior officials during a period of intense crypto industry enforcement. Coinbase had previously requested documents on how the SEC applied securities law to digital assets but was denied, prompting the legal action that was ultimately supported by the court.
