DeepMind Cofounder Hassabis Predicts AGI Within Years, Calls for Frontier AI Regulatory Body

Demis Hassabis, cofounder of Google DeepMind, recently predicted that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be realized within years and would have transformative impacts 10 times greater than the Industrial Revolution. Hassabis called for the U.S. to establish a frontier AI standards body modeled after FINRA to address emerging risks in cybersecurity, nuclear energy, and biological domains. The proposed framework would operate through public-private collaboration managed by independent technical experts, requiring frontier labs to submit models for review 30 days before release, with plans to eventually transition to mandatory market-access testing. Non-frontier models from startups and academic institutions would be exempt.
