DOJ Warned Binance on Reduced Cooperation Starting June 8

According to The Information, on June 8, the U.S. Department of Justice told prosecutors that Binance would reduce voluntary cooperation on crypto cases and end "courtesy" account freezes, instead requiring formal Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) channels for freezes and seizures. Binance denied the reported changes, stating it continues to cooperate with U.S. law enforcement. The shift is significant because investigators typically rely on exchanges to quickly freeze suspicious funds and identify account holders in cases involving hacks, sanctions evasion, ransomware, fraud, terrorist financing and money laundering. Requiring formal MLAT processes could introduce delays, as these requests often involve foreign ministries and law-enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions.
