Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius Cruise Ship Claims 3 Lives, 5 Suspected on May 5

According to the World Health Organization, a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has killed three people and left five others suspected of infection as of May 5, 2026. The vessel, carrying 149 passengers from Argentina to Cabo Verde, has implemented strict quarantine measures including cabin isolation and medical monitoring. Two people have tested positive for hantavirus, a virus transmitted by rodents with a 40% fatality rate. A British tourist is fighting for his life in intensive care in South Africa after disembarking, while a Dutch couple aged 70 and 69 are among the confirmed fatalities.
