Gate News message, April 15 — Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced on April 14 that the government will launch the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in the second half of 2026 to advance AI technology adoption across healthcare, legal, and financial industries. Lee made the announcement via video message at the 2026 International Academician Forum in Hong Kong, organized by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the Hong Kong Association of Overseas Returnee Scholars (HKAORS).
The Hong Kong government is actively implementing the national "AI+" initiative and will continue promoting generative AI, STEAM education, and clinical trial development. Plans include establishing a Greater Bay Area (China's tech and innovation hub spanning Hong Kong, Macau, and nine Guangdong cities) clinical trial collaboration platform and related application centers to accelerate the commercialization of cutting-edge research.
These efforts aim to strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international innovation and technology hub and a magnet for global top-tier talent.
