As of Friday’s close in New York (May 15), most major currencies weakened throughout the week. The euro fell 0.41% to 1.1621, marking a weekly decline of 1.40% (May 12-15); sterling dropped 0.59% to 1.3324, down 2.25% for the week; the New Zealand dollar fell 2.11% weekly to trade lower. The U.S. dollar strengthened against the Swiss franc, rising 0.42% to 0.7870 with a weekly gain of 1.35%. Among emerging market currencies, the Brazilian real posted the steepest decline at 3.59% weekly, while the Indian rupee fell 1.57% and the South African rand declined 1.90% over the same period.
