According to Fuzhou Cangshan District People's Procuratorate, a man was sentenced to 12 years 7 months in prison and fined 300,000 yuan for stealing 4 bitcoin from another person in 2024. The court convicted him of theft after he obtained the private keys to the victim's bitcoin wallet in 2020, transferred the coins to his own account, and sold them for approximately 900,000 yuan. The procuratorate stated that despite virtual currencies not having legal tender status under current regulations, bitcoin possesses value, manageability, and transferability, meeting the criteria of "property" under criminal law and thus subject to criminal liability.
