Meta Tests @meta.ai Assistant on Threads in Five Countries

Meta is testing a new Threads feature that allows users with public accounts to mention @meta.ai in posts and replies to receive answers and context, according to TechCrunch. The beta rollout is currently active in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore.

Feature Functionality

The @meta.ai tool is designed to provide real-time information on trends and breaking stories. When mentioned, the account will post public replies in the same language as the original post, ensuring localized responses across different regions and languages.

Comparison to Existing Platforms

The feature resembles X's Grok integration, offering a similar approach to AI-assisted information retrieval within a social media platform.

User Controls and Feedback

Meta is gathering user feedback before a wider launch and has implemented several control mechanisms. Users can mute @meta.ai entirely, mark its posts as not interested, or hide individual replies from their feeds. These controls allow users to customize their experience with the AI assistant as the company refines the feature.

Meta's this wave of Threads+AI collaboration is quite interesting, first testing the waters in emerging markets, and probably deciding whether to expand globally based on the data.

Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, Singapore — choosing locations is quite deliberate, covering Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, clearly testing user feedback from different cultural circles.
